Just a day after a lobby threatened to sue the county government of Kisumu over the relocation of Kachok dumpsite, Governor Jack Ranguma has announced that the relocation might take longer as the new location has been opposed by the French government funding the Kisumu Urban Project (KUP).
Mr Ranguma said already land had been purchased in Muhoroni constituency but the project financiers have rejected it due to the distance.
Ranguma said he is very concerned with the heaping garbage at the dumpsite noting that he is exploring many possibilities to have it addressed.
“You know the money is not ours so it is very difficult to convince them to stick with the new site for the establishment of a land fill,” he said.
He said that attempts to have a land fill within the vicinity of the city have also been rejected by the Kenya Airports Authority due to flight path.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Friday, Ranguma said he is tossing other alternatives as the financiers promised to carry out more study on the new site.
The governor said the financiers are more concerned with the cost of transporting waste from the city to the new site.
He said they may be forced to create a land fill at the current dump site.
Ranguma further noted that there are many gaping quarries around the city that have killed people in the recent past and may be used to dump the waste.
“Despite all these, I am determined to address the surging waste at Kachok, the first one is to establish that land fill at Kachok, if that is not possible them we will use that waste to fill in those quarries that have been killing our people next to Kanyamedha,” he said.
