Nation Media Group’s reporter Walter Menya will be released today, Tuesday by 5pm, after a court directive.

Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku directed that Menya be detained at the Muthaiga police station for another day, to allow police to take his finger prints.

The prosecution had earlier made an application to remand him for three days.

The Magistrate further directed that he be allowed to see his lawyers, after the team of lawyers led by Senior Counsel James Orengo said the journalist had been denied access to his legal team since Sunday.

Menya was arrested on Sunday after a church service, and even though it is not clear on what he is accused of, he has been charged of taking a bribe from a news source.

He however did not plead to any of the charges, with the prosecution requesting for three days to conclude investigations.

It is alleged that Menya received a bribe on a story on faces behind the Friends of Jubilee Foundation, which was published on Sunday Nation.

According to corporal Moses Gituatha, he was arrested after a complainant, one Kennedy Koros, alleged that Menya demanded Sh50,000 so he could publish a story which was of interest to him, (Koros).

He further claimed Menya received a down payment of Sh32,000 through M-Pesa between June 15 and 17.

According to Gituatha, Menya is to face charges of demanding property with menaces.

“During the arrest, Menya was found in possession of Sh20,000 which was treated for purposes of evidence collection after the report was made and kept as the exhibit.” The affidavit reads.
