The death toll of a grisly accident at Mbaruk, along Nakuru-Nairobi highway, has hit 20.

The Saturday 2am accident involving two trucks, and a passenger bus also left several others injured, after the driver of the bus, tried to overtake a truck, only to collide with an oncoming trailer.

18 people died on spot, as confirmed by Nakuru police commander Hassan Barua. He said preliminary investigations indicate the bus was not supposed to ply the route.

"The bus is legally supposed to operate between Nairobi and Githurai. So we are surprised that it was ferrying passengers to Busia. We are yet to find out why, but we are still conducting investigations,'' Barua told reporters, at the scene of the accident.

"One died as he was being rushed to hospital while another died while undergoing treatment at St Mary's Hospital in Nakuru," he added. He however indicated drivers of both the bus and the truck could have died, or disappeared, since they were not found at the scene.

"We are also investigating where the drivers are, since we are yet to identify there location,'' he said.
