The first batch of regular students admitted at the Garissa University College have started reporting to the institution. The educational institution was deserted in 2014 after a deadly terror attack that left over 140 students dead.
According to Prof. Ahmed Warfa, who is the institution's Principal, over 250 students out of the 470 that applied for consideration at the college had already reported by Tuesday evening.
Warfa further added that they were still expecting more students to report in the near future, stating that a number of the students had been accompanied by their parents and guardians who spent the night in the halls of residence and were happy with the security strategies in place.
“We wish to thank the government, all media agencies, regional leaders, parents and all others who stood with us through the difficult period,” Warfa said.
He expressed his satisfaction that since the 2014 attack, much has been done in enhancing security situation in the institution including the establishment of a police post that is manned by police officers.
The Garissa College re-opened its doors in January, nine months after the tragic terror attack after the ministry of education together with the Moi University senate met on 9th December last year where a decision to re-open the institution was arrived at.
