More than 4,000 new students admitted to Kisii University have opted to look for accommodation off-campus.

The move is a result of the varsity being unable to offer accommodation to all it students.

The institution can only accommodate 400 students and therefore many are forced to look for alternatives.

Some of the students have found shelter in the so-called “second generation houses.” These are houses made of mabati.

A number of shelters have been put up around the campus to meet the high demand for housing by the students.

Nevertheless, the worried first years are feeling insecure staying in the mabatis as they can easily be broken into by thieves.

They fear they might lose their properties.

Furthermore, the rooms are not weather friendly as they become too hot in the day and too cold at night.

Currently, the university is constructing new hostels in its effort to address the shortage.

The new students have now appealed to the university management to speed up completion of the project.
