Fruits and vegetable vendors in Eldoret town have complained of low business following the ban on plastic bags that begun, Monday.

The vendors lamented that they are forced to ask their customers to buy their own bags that they will use to carry the items bought unlike previously when they were giving free paper bags.

"Business has been low today because when someone comes to buy fruits they have to first buy a bag they will use to carry and that fact puts-off most of the customers," noted James Mwangi a fruit vendor.

"The ban is not bad but they could have given us more time and provide for an alternative," added Janet Kurgat, a vegetable vendor.

But as fruits and vegetable vendors lamented, those selling fabric bags that have taken over from the plastic bags were all smiles as their businesses were booming.

"Business is good today. I've sold bags over Sh600 already and I thank the government for the ban on plastic bags," said Osca Wanyama.

The bags, blue and white are sold at between Sh20 to Sh30.
