A family in Bogichocho village Nyamache in Kisii county is yet to come into terms after a committee that was chosen to organise the burial of their grandmother embezzled burial funds.
Family member Raphael Okindo claimed that the burial committee led by Chairman Emmanuel Ondieki, a retired teacher embezzled over Sh30,000 raised in a fund drive to carter for the burial.
“Villagers turned up in large numbers and raised over Sh30,000 during a fundraising. We were shocked as a family when Ondieki, his secretary identified as Nyamote and treasurer Zipporah misused the funds,” said Okindo.
Okindo said they family was forced to postpone the burial which was to take place on Tuesday so that the family can sell off a piece of land to clear hospital and mortuary bills.
“We had no option but to postpone the burial. We want to sell a piece of land to get money and collect the body from mortuary,” he added.
Village elders condemned the burial committee and said they should be arrested.
“We can’t leave the selfish committee members to get away. The burial committee must be compelled to produce the money,” said Martin Onduso an elder.
