A funeral event for former North Mugirango-Borabu MP Okeri Masanya turned chaotic as supremacy battles between different political leaders took centre stage on Friday.
A group of rowdy youth took over the ceremony dictating who would address the mourners.
Trouble started when North Mugirango MP Charles Geni took the microphone to address the crowd with when a section of the youth had demanded that only Borabu MP Ben Momanyi would address them.
The drama unfolded as leaders including Charles Nyachae, MP Richard Onyonka and many others watched in disbelief.
A visibly angry Mr Geni condemned the youth calling them a ‘bunch of stupid people’ before he decided to disconnect the microphone and run away with it from the pavilion.
“I am the area MP and people must show me respect. It’s annoying that some of you are paid to give us difficult time. You are a bunch of stupid people,” Geni was heard saying.
Former CIC chairperson Charles Nyachae who was among leaders who got a chance to address people called for harmony and challenged residents to avoid being incited during funerals events.
“We came here to give Mzee a good sendoff but I am disappointed that we can engage in politics of competition. Let us avoid being used by people who are out to seek unnecessary attention. This is not an election and from today henceforth we must respect funerals,” he said.
Local organising committee Chairperson Wilfred Nyakundi condemned the incident and challenged politicians to be role models to the youth rather than mislead them.
“As one of the organisers, I lack words to explain today’s events. It is such a shame that our politicians can misuse youth by bribing them to disrupt a funeral. This is not the right way to go,” he said as Mr Masanya was laid to rest late in the evening hours.
