A Thika-based philanthropist and businessman has called on the county government and well-wishers to provide latrines in Gachagi slums as there is an acute shortage.
Sam Chege, the founder and chairman of Mia Afrika Sacco has also appealed to area elected leaders to chip in and help resolve the sanitation crisis the residents are facing.
Speaking in the slum on Wednesday, Chege noted that residents are staring at a time bomb and it was just a matter of time before diseases strike.
"I have noted with a lot of concern that Gachagi has got very few latrines and the existing ones are poorly built and very shallow. In case of a heavy downpour they are likely to fill with rain water and overflow causing a huge health risk," said Chege.
He noted that concerted efforts among all stakeholders can at least help built five to seven decent communal latrines to help serve residents.
"Let us all come together and help residents live decently. Preventing diseases outbreak will cost us much less. I appeal to the county government to be on the frontline in resolving this crisis," he said.
