Farmers at Gachege Tea Factory in Gatundu North on Tuesday participated in the election of new Directors, as it had been directed for all KTDA-manned tea factories nationwide.
Benson Thuku, who was elected the Zonal Director for Gachege Electoral Area for the fifth consecutive time, promised to continue fighting for farmers’ welfare and better tea prices.
“The farmers in this area have spoken and now it is getting down to serious business. The voice of the people is the voice of God,” said Thuku, minutes after he was announced the winner.
“I thank the people in my electoral area for electing me for the fifth time, a sign that I have been doing a good job,” he added.
Thuku noted that there is a big challenge ahead of him and his fellow colleagues, due to continued dwindling of tea prices.
“My first task will be to push for elimination of some tea taxes so that the farmer is able to benefit from tea,” said Thuku.
He further promised to press for subsidies to be given to farmers to reduce production cost.
