The county government of Nyamira has yet again come under  criticism from a section of residents from Gachuba ward over the alleged delay of commissioning a market.

The construction was reportedly completed in June, but the county government is yet to allow traders to use the new premises despite persistent appeals by residents.

Speaking at the market on Friday, former councilor James Mogoe led residents in questioning the delayed opening of the premises and urged the Governor John Nyagarama to intervene.

“It is really amazing that the market can be completed several months ago and it remains closed yet locals also participated in its construction. We pay taxes and we demand that it is opened urgently. We urge the governor to intervene and have the market opened to the public,” he said.

Residents say they were facing difficulties in using the old open air market due to the ongoing long rains it the area.

“Traders are making losses in that open market. It is raining from as early as noon and makes selling and buying in open markets difficult. The county government owes us an explanation for the unwarranted delay in officially opening the market,” he added.
