Gambia's longtime leader, Yahya Jammeh, left the country, for Guinea's capital, Conakry.
This is after he stepped down as president following tense negotiations, after West African military intervention.
'The longtime leader faced a showdown with troops from neighboring Senegal, who entered the small West African country less than 24 hours earlier, to enforce the results of December 2016's presidential election.
Jammeh who took power in a 1994 military coup, was defeated by Adama Barrow, but he declined to leave office.
''In a televised address on Saturday morning, Jammeh said it was his duty to "preserve at every instant" the lives of Gambians,'' reports CNN.
Barrow has been in exile in Senegal since political turmoil in Gambia, and it is not yet clear when he will return to Gambia.
