A gang raided the house of an 87-year-old woman and hacked her to death with a jembe.
Peris Njeri was killed by unknown people inside her house in Kilombe village Muricho location, Rongai Nakuru county.
The criminals were said to have gained entry into the house where she stayed alone in the wee hours of Saturday night and killed her.
Rongai police boss Japhet Kioko said the assailants tried to steal maize that was in the woman's house.
Kioko said police who visited the scene of crime found three sacks of maize outside the woman's house and personal belonging of the deceased were found scattered inside the house.
"It is suspected the grandmother was killed by criminals whose intention was to steal maize," said Kioko.
Kioko noted that the incident was reported by a neighbor who failed to see Njeri prepare for church service on Sunday.
