Kamenu Ward MCA Mary Hussein has asked garbage collectors contracted by the county government of Kiambu to desist from piling garbage along the roadsides as they await to transport it to the dumpsite.
Speaking in Kiganjo shopping centre on Monday, the MCA noted that some garbage collectors were piling garbage on the roadsides for weeks before collecting it, posing a great health hazard to residents and road users.
"Garbage collectors should collect garbage from homes and take it to the dumpsite directly. If the garbage truck is not available, no garbage should leave its source,” said Hussein.
She said many roads in the area are not tarmacked and leaving garbage to overstay on the roadside was likely to lead to spread of diseases especially through dust.
Hussein also said she had received complaints from residents that some garbage was being piled along the drainage lines and thus interfering with sewer and waste water movement.
"As they collect their garbage, they must also ensure that they do not interfere with other sanitation works that have been put in place,” she said.
