Private garbage collectors in Nairobi have warned that the city will get dirtier than before with bin liners prohibited together with other plastic bags.
The Waste and Environment Management Association of Kenya on Friday said this will render impossible garbage collection as well as general waste management.
“We cannot operate without plastic bin liners. Therefore, waste management in Nairobi will become impossible for all waste companies from next week,” said chairman Chege Kariuki as quoted by the Star.
The ban, published in the Kenya Gazette February 27, is set to take effect on Monday.
“While waste bin liners have in theory been exempted from the ban, this is not really the case. The conditions set for waste companies as well as manufacturers to receive an exemption are such that it will be impossible for us to comply,” he said.
