The Mombasa County government has urged all persons and entities involved in waste collection and transportation to be registered with the department of the environment.

Environment executive Godfrey Nyongesa said the directive is geared towards handling waste management in the county.

Speaking on Thursday in Mombasa, Nyongesa said the county has issued a seven-day ultimatum for all those involved in waste collection and transportation to be registered.

“All persons and entities currently involved in waste collection and transportation are required to be registered with the department of the environment within seven days. We will also involve the concerned private collectors to be active in solving this problem,” he said.

The environment executive accused private waste collectors of dumping waste in undesignated grounds which he said have become breeding grounds for insects that cause diseases like Cholera and Chikungunya.

“Private waste collectors are to blame for the garbage pile up in the city. The county has designated dumpsites but the waste collectors dump waste in illegal areas,” he said.

Mr Nyongesa said that the county will deal firmly with polluters of the environment within the city.

He further gave commercial entities 20 days to acquire and display garbage bins in a bid to curb the garbage menace in the county warning that they risk having their licences suspended if they fail.
