Garbage is becoming a continuous menace in Kibra.

With lack of proper and clear dump site, minimum county government intervention to address the problem, youth groups have taken it upon themselves to collect garbage within the villages.

Garbage disposal and collection is a tall order, making the community vulnerable to diseases more so to children who have found a playing field on the heap of garbage.

In Makina Ward the following areas are hard hit:

Next to the ACK Church along Kibera Drive, a dump site has been formed that has threatened the transportation along the busy way.

In Karanja Estate right behind Raila Educational Centre on your way to Kisumu Ndogo village is a disaster in the making. The place is becoming impassable considering that it connects Kisumu Ndogo, Kambi Muru and Katwekera villages to Karanja (Salama) Estate.

According to a youth leader of one local garbage collection group, "the County government needs to come in handy to help address the situation.

To him, the youth groups are playing their part through organised collection and conducting cleanups.

There is a need to have a standby truck that is assigned to pick garbage at least three times a week to minimise cases of garbage backlog.

The community needs to establish a recycling plant to tap into resources that come with it.

Members of County Assembly need to ensure they push for enough resources to address garbage problems in all the villages in Kibra.

Civil society needs to give more focus on environmental issues in Kibra to make it a better place.

The garbage problem should not be a tourist attraction but a problem that must be addressed.
