Nakumatt Supermarket has suffered another blow as the owners of Garden City look to have the retailer evicted from its mall along Thika superhighway.

The owners of the mall are currently seeking an order from the High Court for permission to repossess the space occupied by the anchor tenant over debts equivalent to Sh48.1 million.

The retailer has been a tenant at the mall since June of 2016 but with its current financial situation its hard to see them retaining their place at the mall.

According to reports the supermarket had been issued a 30 day notice by the owners of the mall and were to evacuate the premises by October 6.

“Since June 1, 2016, Nakumatt has been in default of its obligations to pay rent, service charges and utilities and the parties have been in discussions about remedying this situation. At present, Nakumatt has defaulted in payment of rent, service charges and utilities to the tune of Sh48,122,509.49 for the period between June 2016 and October 2017,” GC Retail centre manager Edward Mugambi says.

The mall owners further attributed the low number of customers visiting the mall to Nakumatt's financial situation. Traffic has dropped from 22 per cent to  below 10 per cent.
