Garissa University yesterday held its third anniversary in remembrance of the 148 lives that were lost through a cruel act of terror with a 10km marathon race for both men and women.

The event attracted over 200 athletes from across the country who received the cash prize of Sh60,000 each from both categories.

Those who spoke to the press said when they received calling letters from the university; they had to consult parents and relatives first.

Garissa University dean of students Abdirahaman Amoo said the institution been able to pick up after the terror attack and showed the terrorists that they could not kill our resilient to move on.

 He said enrolment has shot up from 750 during the terror attack to 1,195 today and confessed that it took time for parents to some students to accept that the institution was safe and they would come in person to ask for the transfer for students.

CEC in charge of gender, sports and social services Zainab Abdi said the road race was meant to empathize with the families, friends, and relative of the 148 souls who perished in the hands of the Al-Shabaab militia.

 “The message we are sending is that it’s only those students who lost their lives, it’s us the people of Garissa who are most affected. We stand with them in solidarity that is why we keep on remembering them,” Zainab said.

Athletics Kenya (AK) North Eastern region chairman Abdullahi Salat has urged reputable corporate institution in the country to sponsor the Garissa University memorial marathon.

Speaking at the Garissa university after the Monday’s marathon to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of April 2, 2016, terror attack that left 148 people, most of the students dead, Salat said with more sponsors coming in they would be able to invite international athletes.
