Garissa County on Wednesday morning conducted a fire drilling exercise in a bid to expose its staff in the department with more skills to respond to fire emergencies.
The exercise that was conducted at Dadaab, involved county fire brigade team and some members from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
Moments after the exercise, an official from the county fire department disclosed that the drilling exercise was in line with their core mandate to safe lives and property in the event of fire outbreak.
"The department majorly engages in saving lives and property in the event of fire outbreak. Therefore, this exercise was just to arm them with more skills to efficiently deal with fires," affirmed the officer.
In the past, Garissa County government has been facing widespread critics, especially on its disaster management teams, with a section of activists claiming that the department was doing shoddy work.
In the recent drought situation, Jama's administration was largely faulted for failing to address the crisis well on time.
Similarly, during the last cholera outbreak, county disaster response teams were criticized for taking long to address the health crisis.
