(Photo-The star)Garissa county will establish a Directorate of security that will work closely with the national government in handling cross-border conflicts. According to Garissa Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane, the directorate will also deal with inter-boundary disputes, reconciliation between warring communities and peacebuilding among neighboring counties. Dagane was speaking at a Garissa hotel when he closed a multi-stakeholder workshop on cross-border and peacebuilding between district peace committees from Kenya, Juba land, and Lower Juba. He said the directorate will engage elders from his county to solve issues arising from border dispute of the three regions. ‘We know security is not a devolved function, but what we are trying to is to complement the national government to improve the security in the region by offering the necessary support,” said Dagane . Dagane said all this will be close to the national government to ensure that there will be no conflict of interest or otherwise. Garissa Deputy Commissioner Hiddi Galgalo said the National government will support the idea because the whole essence was to serve the residents. Galgalo said security is paramount if the inter-border trade is to flourish. he further said terrorism will be easily dealt with through such as cooperation. The meeting that was organized by IGAD and National Peace Steering Committee is aimed at reviewing cross-border conflicts, dynamics, and approaches along Kenya-Somalia border. It is also meant to share lessons and experience from other border regions of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. The event also brought together peace representatives from Dadaab, Fafi, Hulugho and Ijara Sub Counties.
