Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has hinted that leaders from North Eastern region are considering to hire a team of lawyers for the herders whose camels were killed by suspected security officers in Kalabha and Basin Hargeisa in Tana River County last week.
Speaking at Garissa Primary School grounds on Thursday during Madaraka Day celebrations, Nathif, who condemned the act said that they will ensure that the herders are heard and compensated for the lose.
“We shall ensure that the due process of the law is followed to the later and those involved taken to court and charged for their crimes,” Nathif said as KNA reports.
Jama's remarks comes suspected security officers raided a grazing field in Kalabha and shot dead over 100 camels belonging to herders from Garissa County.
“We have lined up a team of competent lawyers who will pursue the matter to final conclusion. At the moment there are unjustified talks on the matter. We will not allow the issue to end just like that,” Nathif said.
“The only crime, if any, the herders committed was looking for pasture and water for their animals amid the biting drought. There is no justification whatsoever,” he added.
He urged the government to take stern action against the officers involved and compensate the victims.
