A section of Garissa elders are now calling on Senator Yussuf Haji to take a compulsory leave and retire from active politics in the county's political space and hand over the seat to his younger brother.
Addressing a press conference in Garissa town, local elders led by Abdi Sheikh from the larger Baha sub-clan disclosed that they had 'endorsed' the Retired Major General Yussuf Bashir Haji as their next preferred candidate for the 2017 senatorial seat.
Sheikh Abdi hinted that Senator Haji should join his fellow clan elders in designing the way forward for the larger community on matters surrounding socioeconomic and political circles given his long experience in matters of politics and administration.
However, Sheikh Abdi noted that although political seats should never be hereditary, the elders chose Haji's younger brother to succeed him in next year's polls and urged the locals of Garissa County to support their choice of senatorial candidate.
Contrary to the elders’ wishes, Haji has already hinted that he will be seeking to defend his current seat in August general elections.
