The national government has awarded Garissa County a total of Sh783 million as equalisation fund in a bid to boost the county's economic viability.
In a budgetary allocation submitted by Treasury CS, Henry Rotich the funds were allocated to counties but its spending would be managed and coordinated by the national government.
Turkana County was awarded the lion’s share of the counties Equalisation Fund with a massive allocation of Sh1 billion, closely followed by Mandera County with Sh967 million, Wajir County Sh929 million, Marsabit County Sh886 million, Samburu County Sh869 million and West Pokot County with an allocation of Sh929 million.
Rotich noted that the Equalisation Fund had delayed in terms of disbursement owing to the fact that the Commission on Revenue Allocation faced some hiccups in preparing the Marginalization Policy.
The fund is expected to run for a period spanning 20 years with marginalised county governments getting a fresh budgetary allocation each financial year.
