The Garissa County government has said that it will create a conducive environment that will encourage youth from the region to venture into self-employment.

Agriculture and Livestock executive Issa Yarrow said the county government will organize forums for youths to be equipped with skills that will enable them to earn a living.

Mr Yarrow said they will ensure that the program benefits the youth as they will be provided with different ways that will help them acquire skills that will positively change their lives.

He said that such forums are a good way of keeping the youth busy and protecting them against radicalization adding that young people have become a soft target for extremist groups.

“The county government will create a conducive environment for business that will encourage the youth to venture into self-employment instead of joining extremist groups including al Shabaab. The youth will be equipped with skills that will enable them earn a living,” said Mr Yarrow.

The agriculture executive further said that community members from the three largest clans in Garissa county have resolved to unite and work together to ensure there is development in the region.

He said they will organize on how they will reach to the youth and inform them to work together following the agreement by the clans.

“We having the feeling that the youth may not have been well represented but we intend to reach out to them so that they can receive this message of peace,” Mr. Yarrow said.
