Amid concerns on the likelihood of cholera outbreak in the ongoing drought in most parts of the North Eastern region, a community group based in Garissa township has stepped up efforts geared towards containing disease outbreak in areas considered as too risky.
Since the disease was detected by health officials two weeks ago, at least fifteen people have so far lost their lives.
The campaign being spearheaded by SAHI targeted the populous NEP Girls High School and also Iftiin Primary School.
The duo is considered as being most pre-disposed due to a large number of students hailing from lowly rated backgrounds.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, the group's executive director Mr. Abdi Weli Mohamed, said the main objective of the sensitization program was to teach the school children on how best to observe hygiene.
"The group's main objective is to sensitize and train the school children since they are the most affected people across the county,” Abdi told journalists.
The sensitization drive has since received massive support from local leaders including the SAHI lead patron and nominated MCA Fatuma Abdi.
