Somali pastoralists from Garissa County have been ordered to immediately vacate grazing zones in Isiolo following piling tension over sharing of local resources.
Leaders and livestock keepers from Isiolo County have accused Somali herders from Lagdera Sub-County for invading their lands and settling and constructing their own temporary infrastructure on their communal land.
In a consultative meeting with local leaders, Isiolo County commissioner George Natembeya issued that the decision, directing Garissa herders to vacate the grazing area, which is meant to quell the heightened tension between local Isiolo herders and their counterparts from Lagdera.
The commissioner's statements were also seconded by Hassan Kumpa, the MCA for Cherab ward in Isiolo County.
Two months ago, the pastoralist communities in Garissa and Isiolo counties had struck an agreement to share grazing fields for a period of five months until the end of the current dry season.
