The County Government of Garissa on Wednesday kicked off a countywide livestock vaccination campaign.
According to the relevant county departments of livestock, the vaccination campaign will be jointly conducted by officers from the County Department of Veterinary Services, USAID - AVCD LC Project being implemented by the ILRI, FAO and local Agro-vets run by private individuals.
The exercise is meant to improve surveillance on livestock diseases in regard to early warning of emerging animal diseases and their timely response so as to minimise losses of the pastoral economy; improve animal productivity and enhanced livestock marketing.
The just launched vaccination exercise is targeted at controlling the spread of the already reported Peste des Petits Ruminant (PPR) disease cases, and thus safeguarding and maintaining the sources livelihood for the Garissa pastoralist communities.
As part of the vaccination campaign, Livestock Extension Officers will be offering grassroots extension services and engaging with the livestock keepers on various topics including, the various livestock syndromic disease detection and their control methods.
The exercise targets to vaccinate over 120,000 goats and sheep in Fafi and Ijara sub counties within the next two weeks.
