Education stakeholders in Garissa are calling on the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to speed up the release of the much-awaited curriculum for schools so as to give them enough time to comprehend and master it well.

It is highly anticipated that the curriculum design for teachers which acts as a guideline has been delayed and therefore affects the planning of lessons and schemes of work of teachers.

Speaking during a three-day training for Early Child Development (ECD) for Garissa Sub-County teachers in Garissa Primary School, County ECD director Ahmed Bashir said already learning in schools have been compromised for lack of syllabus and related books.

He said a good period of time into the first term has gone to waste and nothing meaningful has been taught in all schools in the county.

Bashir, however, lauded the new curriculum saying it gives an opportunity to pupils to pursue subjects that they feel they are comfortable with and eventually become relevant after completing school.

Abshar Mohammed the County Quality Assurance Officer said training of Grade 1, 2 and 3 teachers started early this month under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and were now concentrating with the EDC teachers so that they all be at par before the layout of the curriculum.

He said this will assist the teachers to catch up with the syllabus early enough and effectively implement the curriculum.

However, teachers who attended the training called for more time to conduct curriculum training so that they can learn in depth its contents.

Abubakar Jillo a teacher at Bakuyu Primary School said the time it takes for the curriculum to be rolled out will bring about confusion in both the teachers and pupils.

The training has been carried out in the seven sub-counties within Garissa County.
