Garissa leaders have told President Uhuru Kenyatta that they fully support his decision to shut down the Dadaab Refugee Camp.
The State House spokesman, Manaoah Esipisu confirmed this in a tweet on Saturday when the president had a meeting with leaders from Garissa at the North Eastern Regional Coordinator's residence.
"Garissa leaders tell President Kenyatta they fully support his decision to shut down the Dadaab Camp," read the tweet.
The decision comes in the wake of diplomats from UN Security Council holding talks with Uhuru on Friday.
On the other hand, Kenya’s decision to close down the Dadaab Refugee Camp and funding cut to the peacekeeping mission by Amisom in Somalia featured prominently in discussions between President Kenyatta and diplomats from the UN Security Council.
In a Friday article by Business Daily, Esipisu revealed that no resolution was indicated over the repatriation exercise.
Although the Interior Ministry seems to be proceeding with its plan after setting up a 14 member task force to come up with a strategy plus timelines and costs for the repatriation. At least, more than 500 million Somali refugees in Kenya are likely to be affected.
Funding cut to the peacekeeping mission by Amisom in Somalia topped the agenda when President Kenyatta met diplomats from the UN Security Council 15 member state.
The UN Security Council members from New York for a four-day visit to Kenya, Somalia and Egypt.
