Garissa County residents are lamenting water shortage in the area, and claim to be walking for more than 10 kilometres from town to Tana River to find the precious commodity, as others contemplate migrating from the town.
"It's extremely difficult being in this town today; water usage is everything, it's a daily life. Imagine looking for water from dawn to dusk because there is no water even for cooking food. We need urgent intervention," said Mama Halima Mohamed, a resident.
She said that the county government has failed to address their pleas to restore normalcy, but only worsen prevailing water crisis within the town.
In recent public hearing, locals have explained to board members of their tribulations over the water problems, and were unanimous that the water firm had failed to offer their core mandate of provision of clean water and therefore they ought to be disbanded all together.
Abdirizak Mohamed told water regulatory body that the water problem started at the inception of devolution, claiming that the local water company is riddled with outright corruption as its officials only supply water to those who pay them directly.
He described claims by the county administration that water problem is coming from the expansion of the town as shallow, saying that the Garissa town has not expanded much as to warrant lack of water from some areas.
