Members of the Garissa County Assembly have clashed over the demolition of illegal structures that is being carried out by the county government.

A section of the local leaders wants the issue to be sorted in an organized manner that will include wide consultations while others support the demolitions along Ring Road saying that the town needs proper planning.

Speaking to the press on Friday at the County Assembly, MCAs that support the demolition accused those opposing the move of hindering the delivery of campaign pledges.

Masalani MCA Abubakar Mohamed faulted his colleagues for obstructing a project that was passed by the county assembly. His sentiments were echoed by Bura MCA Abdullahi Omar.

However, Galbet MCA Abdirizak Ismail warned the county against rushing while dealing with matters related to land. His area is affected by the demolitions and dismissed the claim that the project was discussed in the county assembly.

‘I have no idea what report the county government is using to implement this project. It’s not possible for any government to just wake up and start destroying structures without consultations,” he told Daily Nation.

Ismail requested Governor Ali Korane to stop the demolition and consult all stakeholders. He warned that there will be resistance from people if their consent is not sorted.
