Garissa County appeared among the counties that were severely affected by the drought and lack of acute water.
According to Northern Water Services Board (NWSB) that serves Garissa, Wajir, Madera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu and Laikipia, about two million people and hundreds of their livestock need water supply urgently.
Speaking in Marsabit, NWSB's CEO Abdikadir Osman said that the water shortage resulted from the drought that hit the region for several months.
He added that they are supplying water to the people of the affected counties through water bowsers, although the cost of supplying water using trucks is high due to fuel used.
“Some of the water bowsers are hired and they are still not enough to serve the residents. We are faced with logistical nightmare because the region is vast and herders have migrated to distant areas,” said Osman.
David Timado, Board of Management Director has called on all stakeholders to do all that they can to save lives of the people and their livestock since the drought is at the crisis level.
“All stakeholders from the county and national governments, NGOs and the international community should focus on combating the drought to save human, livestock and wildlife from death,” said Timado.
