Garissa police will now have juvenile cells where children will be contained to avoid interacting with hardcore criminals.
According to the North Eastern police Commander Edward Mwamburi, the opening of the child protection units at the Garissa police station will ensure children get a humane treatment as they undergo correctional services.
Mwamburi said police officers will closely work with other concerned stakeholders in ensuring the facility benefits children in conflict with the laws of the land.
The Sh12 million protection unit was constructed by the Garissa County and eqauipped by the UNICEF. Another unit equivalent of a police cell will work as a holding ground for juveniles.
UNICEF Country representative Schultink Werner, who officially launched the facility said the correctional unit will help children from the region to stay in a dignified environment even as the law enforcers endeavor to prepare them before getting integrated into the larger society.
