The unearthed syndicate involves illegal issuance of passports, birth certificates and even Kenyan passports by government officials, a vice said to have been happening for a while now.

According to OCPD Aron Moriasi, officers from the directorate of criminal investigations conducted a thorough check following widespread allegations that a number of high ranking officials at the immigration department were working in cahoots to register non-citizens.

Already three suspects have been arrested by the investigating police and shall be arraigned in court.

“Investigating officers already have three main suspects, who are currently being held for further interrogation. They will greatly help us get hold of more suspects in the cartel and also get to the bottom of this matter,” said Moriasi.

Police also staged a surprise raid on several business premises within Garissa town and recovered completed death and birth certificate forms, original national ID cards and uncompleted forms that have been undersigned by different chiefs from Garissa County.
