Schools in Garissa County performed well in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) released on Tuesday by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Private schools in Garissa County posted positive results by producing best performers in this year’s Standard Eight national exam results.

Girls in the county performed well than their male counterparts as the best girl at Mnara Academy, Al Azar Isat Abdullahi scored 410 marks.

Another girl who was at position two was Hibbo Ali who scored 408 marks while Maryann Ali scored 407 marks.

Abdullahi while speaking to the press attributed her success to hard work, dedication, and prayers.

Hibbo and Maryann attributed their success to hard work, ambition and determination saying support from teachers, parents and prayers led to their excellent performance as they both want to join Kenya High School and later pursue medicine.

“I want to give special thanks to my parents who gave me all the support. Without them, I wouldn’t have gotten these marks. I also want to extend the same to the staff and management of the school for creating an enabling environment for us to study and perform,” said Hibbo.

Public schools in the region faced different challenges among them infrastructure, insecurity and lack of enough teachers after non-local teachers deserted several schools due to terror attacks by Al-Shabaab.

The challenges facing the education sector in the county played a role in the dismal performance of public schools in the national examination.
