Garissa residents who have put up structures on ring road land have been asked to remove them before they are demolished by the government.
Lands executive Mohamed Shale said the county has started demolishing illegal structures outside ring road after the expiry of a two weeks’ notice.
There was, however, some resistance from the residents on Friday and the county government had to suspend the exercise.
Mr. Shale had said that the county government has developed a plan for the land, and would allocate plots afresh to members of the public who genuinely need them.
He said the resident had encroached into government land and put up illegal structures but urged them to vacate the area to pave way for the programme.
“I am appealing to the residents of Garissa especially those with structures outside the ring road to cooperate. They need to know this is a programme that was initiated even before the county government came into place,” he said.
Early January, the lands executive had warned that the government will forcefully evict them and tear down any building encroaching on the land if the residents fail to vacate.
Mr. Shale said the county government plans to allocate over 10,000 parcels in the next six months.
“We have application forms for those in need of land. A committee will determine the criteria for application. It will be transparent. Nobody will be shortchanged,” he said.
