All roadlocks in Garissa and its environs shall be manned by special police units in a bid to improve security and deal with corruption in the volatile North Eastern region.
This emerged after county commissioner James Kinda disclosed news on the formation of an elite unit comprising of regular and Administrative Police officers whose major assignment will be to wipe out corruption in the region's major highways.
“We have been receiving numerous complaints from the members of public. It is now time that something tangible is seriously undertaken because corruption is eating into the fabrics of our economy and also our basic morals,” he affirmed.
Kianda noted that criminals were easily bribing their way into the country to carry out attacks, further urging clerics to work together with the security agents to prevent the enemy from propagating hatred among the locals.
In the recent past, the public has been complaining and accusing traffic officers currently deployed in the Garissa roads of massive bribery and cases of extortion.
The corrupt officers will be replaced by twenty specialized officers who are currently undergoing rigorous training at Kanyonyo.
The ongoing training is being conducted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards, the Kenya Revenue Authority, EACC officials and the state department of Immigration.
