Residents of Garissa and neighbouring counties are set to immensely benefit from the Garissa Solar Park project that will offer cheap power as compared to the diesel-powered generators.
The project that kicked off in July this year is expected to offer 55-megawatts of power, a fact that the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has hinted will avail power going at as low as Sh12 ($0.12) per unit which is about Sh6 lower than the diesel-generated power currently on use.
According to the REA chief Ng’ang’a Munyu, the power from the Garissa plant will finally be injected into the national power grid as part of the popular plan to wean the North Eastern town off its log time reliance on the expensive thermal electricity and eventually boosting economic viability in the entire region.
On completion, the solar farm with close 210,210 solar panels, is projected to be the largest plant ever to be put up in entire East and Central Africa region.
