According to Sammy Itemize, who is the Principal Secretary for broadcasting and telecommunications, the ministry has awarded the installation tender to Telkom Kenya and a US based Avante International Technology company to install free Wi-Fi hot spots in all the 290 constituencies.

“The ministry has already awarded the tenders and we are now at the roll out stage,” he said on Monday, adding that the project will be funded through constituency development fund (CDF).

'Treasury has offered about Sh300 million to be used in the development of infrastructure, where the Wi-Fi project will ride on the national optic fiber backbone that will link all the 47 counties,” added the PS.

The Wi-Fi technology will allow electronic devices to connect to all wireless networks using the low radio frequency bands.

In Garissa County, Garissa town has been selected as the wifi hotspot zone owing to its strategic location and the resident population it holds.
