The al-Shabaab commander, Mohamed Dulyadayn alias Kuno, is reported to have been killed on Tuesday at Farwamo village, north of Kismayo.

Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet said they received reports stating the operation was conducted by the Somali government in collaboration with foreign forces.

"We have reports that he was killed in an air strike by special security forces. He was behind the Garissa university attack," said Boinnet.

Four other high ranking al-Shabaab members are said to have been killed during the raid.

Kuno, who was in charge of external operations against Kenya, is believed to be behind several other al-Shabaab terror attacks on Kenyan soil.

Reports of Kuno's death made headlines in July, 2015, but it later emerged that the commander had escaped with injuries following a drone attack in Somalia.

The Garissa attack claimed the lives of 148 people, most of them students.

The attack was the deadliest in Kenya since the 1998 United States Embassy bombings.
