The Garissa University on Monday held its third anniversary since the Al-Shabaab attack at the institution.
Garissa County Government officials said they will no longer allow terror suspects to cause damage in North Eastern region.
County Secretary Abdi Sheikh asked the Garissa residents to not allow Al Shabaab to thrive and divide them.
Mr. Sheikh said calm has returned in the region since the attack in 2015 and learning resumed at the institution adding that the county government which is led by Governor Ali Korane will ensure that the attack will not cause enmity.
He emphasized the need for the continued fostering of peaceful coexistence adding that the county government has put in place measures to ensure the residents are well protected.
“Security in Garissa has improved and what happened here should not create fear. As county government we will do everything to ensure our people live in peace,” said Mr. Sheikh.
The county secretary further said that the regional government is developing programmes on de-radicalization, targeting the youth.
The University was closed following a terrorist attack by Al-Shabaab gunmen on April 2, 2015, that resulted in the deaths of 148 people.
