Garissa woman-rep elect Anab Gure has said that she will ensure that the girl child gets educated during her reign in office.
Gure said that the rate at which girls are dropping out of school is alarming; adding that parents and other stakeholders should support her in this.
“It is my sincere appeal to all, especially the parents, that we seriously address this problem because this is the only way to empower our women,” she said as quoted by Star.
The vocal lawmaker said that cultural issues have greatly affected the lives of the girl child in the county, adding that time has come for change.
She also said that women have become sole breadwinners hence they deserve better opportunities when it comes to leadership.
“Women, because of cultural issues, have been sidelined when it comes to major decision-making. It’s no secret that women are the breadwinners of a number of households in Garissa today and this can no longer be brushed aside,”
She further thanked the residents for supporting her candidature and promised not to disappoint them once she takes over office.
“Elections are over. Those who voted for me or otherwise remain residents of Garissa and must be served equally without favour,” Gure said.
