A group of youths from Garissa County have embarked on a 1000 Km walk dubbed 'Walk of Hope' that will involve traversing the whole north eastern region.
The walk’s aim is to sensitise residents on the need for peace.
Flagging off the event on Saturday, Garissa sub-county commissioner Stephen Orindi called on the residents to be vigilant during the month of Ramadhan.
Orindi revealed that the youths will also be encouraging the residents on the need to volunteer information to law enforcers.
“Security as president Kenyatta keeps saying begins with you. We need to pick up the pieces and build a peaceful environment. Our desire is to have peace in the region,” said Orindi.
Orindi's words were echoed by the county’s agriculture executive, Sophia Omar.
“I would like to appeal to all Kenyans and the people of north eastern to work on peace and to be vigilant for the sake of our country and region. Let us also volunteer information to law enforcers,” she said.
The walk comes at a time when the education sector in the region is in limbo after a mass exodus of non-resident teachers following a number of terror attacks that left a number of them dead.
Participants will be accorded security throughout the walk.
