Young men and women in Garissa County have been urged to join Saccos in large numbers to boost their economic status.

NYS Director Sospeter Mabeya said the money will enable many youths in the county to provide for themselves by engaging in small-scale income-generating activities.

Mr Mabeya said members will be able to access savings and called on the youth to use it to open businesses as a form of empowerment.

The director urged the youth to develop a saving culture noting that their savings will help them to invest in business activities.

“The programme aims to equip the youths with skills to do business and better their lives by forming SACCOs to inculcate the culture of saving their earnings for future investments.”

“The youths will be required to form a Sacco that will see Sh141 deducted daily from their wages and deposited in the SACCOs account. It will also enable them to apply for funds from Youth Enterprise Fund and other government kitties to set businesses. A Sacco consists of between 10 to 15 members,” he said.

Mr Mabeya further urged the youth to dissociate themselves from nonproductive activities and support government initiatives to improve their living standards.

He said 900 youths in Ijara Constituency, Garissa will be employed during the six-month programme adding that 790 youths have been registered in the programme that has been launched in 260 constituencies.

Mr Mabeya said the youths will be engaged in community work, including cleaning the town, collecting used polythene bottles and papers, tree planting in learning institutions and hospitals among others.
