Garre community council of elders has been dissolved following a dispute over the criteria used to select leaders to succeed incumbents.

Garre community representatives led by Abdullahi Abdi accused the council of failing to make decisions.

Speaking at a convention in Elwak subcounty attended by more than 1,000 community members, the group expressed its dissatisfaction over the role of the council of elders.

“We are deeply disappointed by the decision of the elders to violate the charter on choosing leaders who will take over from the incumbents,” Abdi said.

According to an agreement drafted previously, the council was expected to involve 20 people from each of the clans in making democratic decisions on behalf of the people.

Members of the council have, however, rubbished the decision arguing that it was engineered by some individuals with selfish interests.

“We don’t know what they are trying to do, but it will certainly fail because the elders’ decision is final,” said the council Chairman Haji Noor.

Abdi added that attempts to urge for round table negotiations failed terribly, prompting them to make this decision.

“We do not want to see what we saw during the elders’ announcement – our own people fighting among each other because of poor decisions by the elders. We tried to involve them in talks but they have turned down our proposal,” he said.
