Dairy farmers in Gathima-ini location, Thika East have been urged to store plenty of silage to cushion their animals from hunger during seasons of pasture shortage.
Thika East Agricultural Officer Stephen Muia speaking in Gathima-ini on Monday noted that pastures had increased in the area as a result of the ongoing rainfall.
Muia further noted that much of the pastures was going to waste instead of being stored to help the farmers when pastures are scarce.
"Right now there is more than enough fodder for the animals to feed on. The excess should be stored to help mitigate the impact of dry weather ahead. Heavy rains are often followed by long period of drought," Muia said.
The agricultural officer said that there were experts in his department and that of Livestock that would help farmers get to know how to store silage.
"Silage making and storage is something many farmers may not know how to go about but in our agriculture and livestock departments, we have enough experts who can help," he said.
He said that good storage measures would help the farmers have enough to last their animals till the next rainy season.
