Speaking in his Kilimambogo office on Wednesday, Thika East Agricultural Officer Stephen Muia said that there was a need for the farmers to be regularly updated on how to nurture the bananas.

"Tissue culture bananas are not very common here and that is why the farmers need to be trained by relevant experts throughout till their bananas mature. Otherwise, they may not yield the desired results," Muia said.

Currently, Muia said, over 500 farmers have already benefited with 10 suckers each and the programme will continue to reach out to more farmers.

"This is not only going to enhance food security in this area but will also be an alternative source of income for farmers and that is why we want to roll it out to all farmers," he said.

The programme was initiated by area MCA Cecilia Wamaitha, a month ago as a way of fighting perennial food shortage occassioned by harsh dry weather.
