Ruiru MP Ester Gathogo has hailed a directive by Cabinet Secretary for Education in reducing school fees as milestone in the education sector.
Gathogo said that the directive came at the right time, when many parents are struggling to raise school fee.
she noted that some schools are charging over Sh120,000 per year, which is beyond the reach of many parents.
Speaking on Saturday during officiating the opening of CDF -funded classrooms at Githunguri sub-county, Gathogo urged the Ministry of Education to enforce the directive to ensure parents ate not exploited.
“The Education Ministry should see the implementation of the directive to tame rogue head teachers from fleecing parents,” said Gathogo.
On Friday, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Jacob Kaimenyi ordered all public schools to adhere to new school fees guidelines.
The new directive caps the maximum allocation of school fees for non-boarders to be not more than Sh10,000 per year, and for boarders to be Sh57,000 per year and be distributed in the ratio of 50:30:20.
The legislator expressed concerns over many poor students, who have failed to join form one due to skyrocketing school fees.
The lawmaker hailed the role played by CDF Funds in promotion of education, and called those rooting for the scrapping of the fund to think twice.
she also denied allegations that CDF is being misused by MPs to gain political mileage .
“CDF Funds have been instrumental in shaping the education sector and it’s a pity to see some people calling for its death,” said Gathogo.
