Gatongora Ward MCA George Gitau has asked constituents in his ward to be tolerant with the Maasai pastoralists who graze their cattle in the area.
Speaking during a peace meeting held on Thursday at Mwariki Farm in the ward, Gitau said the meeting had been arranged after it emerged that the Maasai herders were allegedly grazing their animals in people's farms without consent.
“I would like to request communities living here to live in mutual respect and understanding. Herders must ask for permission to graze their animals in people's farms while residents should not be hostile to them,” said Gitau.
The MCA said he would not want a situation like the one in the North Rift where communities have been fighting over grazing lands and water.
However, residents have said that more should be done claiming that some Maasai livestock have diseases which they claim are affecting their livestock.
Gitau promised to partner with the county veterinary department to look into the matter to ensure that the herders' animals do not spread diseases in the area.
